First, DON'T PANIC, take a couple of deep breaths, relax, and Welcome to Fly By Night Recovery. If you're here it's because you've had a disaster involving your hard drive and hopefully FBN can help you resolve that. Fly By Night is a small data recovery service that is dedicated to the Mac user and only recovers data from hard drives configured for Apple computers. There are plenty of data recovery services that cater to PC users running other operating systems and then as a side will recover data for a Mac. We cater specifically to you, the Mac user, and the founder of Fly By Night has been a faithful Mac user since 1995. We even use Macs at FBN to recover your data so you can be assured we are focused on, and very familiar with, the Mac platform.

Fly By Night is devoted to the Mac user and we focus on people who have had a disaster after a software upgrade. Or, maybe your three year old was helping daddy with his computer work by reformatting your second drive where all your financial information, and that wedding video you have been intending to burn to a DVD, are located. Possibly your power went out and now your Mac won't boot, or you're missing data. Our goal is to recover your data, place it on a new hard drive without ever overwriting any files on your old hard drive, and return both drives to you without any hidden fees. Our fees are clearly posted and they include return shipping of both hard drives. We will not deviate from these charges except for special shipping requests. Overnight shipping is very expensive.

Data recovery is not a simple procedure and requires a great deal of patience. The method we employ scans your entire hard drive looking for every byte of data. This can take countless hours depending on the size of the drive, and often two or three scans with varying configurations may be required to locate all your valuable files, photos, and videos. Our initial charge of $40 covers that preliminary process. If it is determined that your drive has been physically damaged in some way, or we cannot recover the family photos you so dearly value, your hard drive will be returned to you and no further expense will be incurred except for return shipping costs. Fly By Night uses the United States Postal Service to ship your hard drive back to you.

If your hard drive is making grinding, scraping, tapping, or loud clacking noises it is quite possible the heads are grinding, or making contact with, the spinning hard drive platters indicating your hard drive is failing physically. Unfortunately, FBN cannot recover data from a drive that is physically failing. The noises we describe are much more than the quiet clicking sounds you may have heard your hard drive making when it is searching for a file, or when you were starting your Mac first thing in the morning to check your email. If your Mac is making these unusual noises you need to shut down immediately to prevent further damage to your hard drive, unplug your Mac so no one starts it, and with a different computer find a recovery service with a Clean Room that can disassemble your hard drive and recover your data. FBN does not have the facilities to recover data from a physically damaged hard drive and we cannot recommend a recovery service that can help you. We apologize for any inconvenience that may cause you.

FBN strongly recommends you keep a backup of your data. There are numerous backup applications available for the Mac but we recommend, and use, SuperDuper. It has received glowing reviews over the years and it continues to be an excellent backup application that is reasonably priced. Please remember that you need to periodically boot from your backup and test each account to ensure you have a viable backup, and before every Security or OS update you perform. You never know when an update is going to cause major problems and it is best to plan ahead for a disaster. The reason you're here is because you've had a disaster.
